Check Out My Process During The 2018 Symposium:

REFLECTION #1:

In our process of exploration with our topic, we deepened our research with Ms. Park’s contribution by adding the economics and environmental aspects of the dairy industry versus the scientific community project. Furthermore, our group discovered useful information or articles that support our topic. For instance, one article named, “ Impacts Dairy Production has on the economy “, is a good source to support the category of economics in our research. The economics is contributed by the dairy industry and that there is approximately 270 million cows that are part of this industry, according to this article. But since there are many cows part of this industry, there may be some harm or health risks threatening the cows. This article called, “ Indians Concerned About Dairy Animals’ Welfare, “ supports the reasoning of unstable health conditions for the Indian dairy industries. According to this article, there has been measures and procedures taken for cows to prevent overcrowded areas and stress. These articles connects to generalizations of man-made and intentional because humanity is forcing cows to produce unnatural milk because of the popular demand of dairy such as milk, yogurt, cheese, etc.  My collaboration with Arianna is going smoothly, although there are some things we can’t agree on, I am still glad that she’s my partner because of her positive contribution and energy. Especially when we were researching on what conflict we were going to do, I came across milk and thought it was interesting. I proposed the idea to Arianna and she absolutely loved it but you can see why she liked the topic. Hint. Hint ( She loves cows and drinking milk )
The dairy industry in India is taking some concern matters especially on the cows’ health. Majority of the cows in India is living in unstable conditions and overcrowded areas since the dairy industry there is highly successful. Since the dairy industry is successful, there is a demand of milk which results farmers in having their cows produce unnatural milk

This relates to generalization may be natural or man-made, or intentional or unintentional.

Reflection #2

We are still completing the ISD but have successfully completed the big idea chart and the language of the discipline. For the ISD, Arianna and I are managing how we are going to split up the work equally but by then we will working on the Opposing sides for the 5 generalizations. Our driving question did change slightly because it needed improvement but it wasn’t a significant change. Also, our topic did not change but stayed the same with more concepts to research such as economics and environment. For our student-led research, we are conducting a public, anonymous survey. Since our topic is milk, a survey would have been the best fit for our project. Getting the survey approved was difficult because it took many revisions and help from our mentors. Also, for the survey it was hard to distribute our survey to other people that we don’t know of but we overcame that obstacle. There was nothing easy about creating the survey. In our next steps, we need to make sure we complete every assignment on time, get the survey results we need, start working on the board design and finishing the ISD by February 13th. In terms of our collaboration, we are managing to do well in a steady pace so far but I predict there will be many conflicts in the upcoming future in our partnership. Arianna and I are communicating well and we have an image that kind of already planted our whole process of research. I cannot think of anything that is not going well for us.

Reflection #3

We are almost to completion of the ISD and it is going great thanks to Ms. Park generous extension. I admit there has been a little procrastination and there shouldn’t be any extensions to prevent procrastination. Extensions should be made at the last minute. The last time we wrote our research, we learned quite a lot especially to the grateful hands of Ms. Park’s helpful emails. We been on track with the Board and the ISD due to Ms. Park’s high expectations and it made me realize the ability to work with others. Arianna and I are very picky and have our own styles, but we always make it work no matter how challenging the work is. Arianna has a unique mind and she excels in areas where things such as information should be edited. When she writes, she has a tone of maturity and writes very well.  Our group wants to achieve a realistic looking milk carton. Not only we are building a milk carton, we are creating hands from different groups ( The dairy and scientific community ) injecting or ejecting their own motives into the milk. That is what symbolizes the hands and the injection needles. For our creative piece, we decided to create a large size model, milk carton, that pours mixed messages into a cup that represents as milk. In those mixed messages, we have all types of information stating different facts about milk on whether it is healthy or not. By this. We hope to achieve that the visitor's minds will be puzzled. Therefore, it’s an interactive element that is part of our project. To go ahead into the next steps, we have to think on how we are going to create these art pieces which is going to be challenging. The collaboration is going kind of stable, there’s no such thing as perfect collaboration. With our different personalities, some matters are difficult to handle.

Reflection #4

Our driving question is, “ How Do Opposing Motives Of the Scientific Community and the Dairy industry contribute to conflicting messages about drinking cow’s milk? “

We have not yet rehearsed but, we did practice our flashcards that provided some questions that we might be asked at our presentation. I don’t think we had something approved right away, it was always constant revision and I think students take it too personal but, the revision that Ms. Park made us change, really made a difference in our project. Our topic was easy to find scholarly sources since various of experts have had experiences and reports on it. The student - led research was fun to do but very hard to get it approved on the first try. What I learned during the presentation was that I stutter a lot due to nervousness. It was quite fun when the audience is engage with us by asking questions. In terms of collaborating with my group member, it was fun and although it was bumpy throughout the journey, it was an unforgettable experience. If I have to do my project again differently, I would have met the deadlines and finish on time by not procrastinating. We were on track in the beginning, but it started to slow down due to how busy both me and Arianna are. Our creative piece was actually quite meaningful because we showcased both perception of milk. One piece of advice I would give to an incoming student who is just learning about Symposium is to not procrastinate and to take everything slow but not too slow. Also, to be productive and creative when doing your project to exceed your mentor’s expectation.

Reflection #5

Student name: Azzee Lim

Driving Question:
How do opposing motives of the scientific community and the dairy industry contribute to conflicting messages about drinking cow’s milk>

List all group members (first and last names)
Azzee Lim
Arianna Diaz

In your opinion, how well did you and your group work together (ie. communication among members, the number of times you met OUTSIDE of class to collaborate or work on project etc). Give specific examples.

If I were to rate on how well I worked with my group member, Arianna, I would rate it a nine out of ten. We collaborate mostly on Saturdays during win academy and a half an hour after school during weekdays. We communicate well and criticize each other’s work. Although there has been debate around certain things, it comes out well at the end.

Do you feel as though some members of the group worked harder than other members or was the workload spread evenly?  How much for the group was completed by you? Explain.

I did mostly of the ISD while Arianna contributed a lot for the poster board and the creativity. There has been arguments, but those has been resolved. The workload was kind of spread evenly.

How many times did you meet with your mentor teachers (list each mentor teacher) outside of class. Write the dates of how often you met your mentor teacher by referencing your mentorship log. How well do you believe you accepted the guidance and advice of your mentor teachers? Explain.

I met often with my mentors even after school hours.

The dates we met:
  • 1/9/2018
  • 1/12/2018
  • 1/16/2018
  • 1/20/2018
  • 1/20/2018
  • 1/25/2018
  • 1/27/2018
  • 1/31/2018
  • 2/1/2018
  • 2/8/2018
  • 2/9/2018
  • 2/13/2018
  • 2/16/2018
  • 2/20/2018
  • 2/22/2018
  • 2/26/2018
  • 3/8/2018
  • 3/7/2018
  • 3/9/2018

Were you satisfied with the final product? Why or why not?

I was completely satisfied with my project because it came out better than expected.
